Kanna is a succulent found in the deserts of South Africa.
Kanna is an empathogen, and a true sacred plant, having been used in ceremony for thousands of years by the San and Khoi people.
Today, Kanna is most commonly used recreationally for its euphoric and empathogenic effects, and therapeutically for its anxiolytic and neurogenic benefits.

Kanna comes from the desert region of South Africa known as the Karoo.
The Karoo is the most biodiverse desert on Earth. It is home to over 6000 species of succulents, 200 species of birds, 90 species of reptiles, 75 species of mammals, and 70 species of scorpions!
Many of these species can only be found in the Karoo, including Wild Kanna.
Kanna is a sacred plant to the San and Khoi.
The plant is used ceremonially for rites and rituals, for inducing trance states and dancing, and for social occasions.
Traditionally, Kanna is chewed or smoked after going through a fermentation process.

Kanna is non-toxic, non-addictive, and has demonstrated efficacy in some of the most important aspects of health and wellbeing. Including:
Improving Mood and Mental Health
Relieving Stress and Improving Sleep
Facilitating Love and Connection
Kanna measurably enhances the function of the neurotransmitters closely associated with feelings of positivity, connection, and safety. For a more detailed description of Kanna’s effects we highly recommend reading this research paper.
Kanna’s ability to calm the nervous system can have positive impact on both relieving stress and restoring healthy sleep patterns.
As an empathogen, and when used intentionally, Kanna can help facilitate intimate physical and emotional connection.
Mesembrine is the primary alkaloid found in Kanna.
Mesembrine is responsible for most of the measurable effects and benefits of Kanna, and is generally used to evaluate the potency of a Kanna product.
To learn more about the pharmacology of Kanna and its mesembrine alkaloids we highly recommend reading this research paper. It contains a brief synopsis of the most relevant research on Kanna conducted over the last 30 years.

Kanna is a slow growing desert succulent that is becoming increasingly difficult to find in the wild. Only very limited-run, craft products can be be made with Wild Kanna. So virtually all Kanna that is sold commercially is cultivated in South Africa.
Sustainability, ethical sourcing, and quality are at top of mind when selecting any of our ingredients, especially Kanna.
All of the Kanna we use is grown in South Africa by permitted growers, that use beyond organic growing standards, and have benefit sharing agreements in place with the South African San Council.
So a percentage of all Kanna purchases we make is distributed among these indigenous communities. This is true for all legal + permitted Kanna growers in South Africa following the Bioprospecting, Access, and Benefit Sharing (BABS) Regulations.
If you’d like to learn more about Kanna’s journey into cultivation I highly recommend watching this YouTube video, and you can also read more about BABS here.
On the ecological front, commercially cultivated Kanna is very low impact — especially when compared to any agricultural product in the United States. Kanna is a desert succulent that just needs sun, sand, and water (and not much of it) to grow. It’s very hardy so there’s basically no need for synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.
Wild Kanna has been devastatingly over harvested since the 1600’s. The modern day commercialization of Kanna has created a major economic incentive to bring wild strains into cultivation and is actually preserving the genetic diversity of this incredible plant.
